Definition of temporary work

Different industries refer to a temporary position in different ways. In general terms, a temporary employee is someone who works for an organisation on a non-fixed-term basis. The employee's salary is usually calculated on an hourly rate and is paid through the Velocity payroll. Generally, no notice period is required to terminate temporary employment by either party, although there may be exceptions to this rule.

Why temp with Velocity?

Temping with Velocity just couldn’t be better. As a Velocity temp, you can expect a dedicated reward and recognition programme, personal development, competitive pay rates and the security that comes from working with a consultant who will listen to you and understand your needs. We also make sure we are familiar with our clients’ working environments so that you can go to every assignment well prepared.

Things to consider

Whatever your reasons for entering temporary employment, there are a number of things to consider:

1. How to stay in work
Professionalism, skill, a good work ethic and a great relationship with your consultant and employer are crucial to ensuring a steady stream of temp jobs. Always update your consultant on your availability and any changes to your contact details. Also, keep your CV up to date with newly-acquired experience and skills.

2. Tax
Velocity will deduct PAYE (pay as you earn) tax from your salary automatically. You will need to complete an IR330 and apply for an IRD number if you are working in New Zealand for the first time. You can obtain an IR330 from your consultant.

To apply for an IRD number, contact Inland Revenue on 0800 227 774 or go to www.ird.govt.nz

3. Holiday and sick leave entitlement
Velocity pays standard hourly pay from the beginning of each assignment to all PAYE temporary workers. We also pay a maximum of four weeks annual leave and ten days sick-leave after six months continuous service. Other conditions apply - please talk to your Velocity Consultant.

4. Visa requirements
You must have the right to work in the New Zealand to be considered for temporary or contract roles. If you are not a New Zealand or Australian national, we will reject your application unless you have secured, or are eligible for, a New Zealand visa. Unfortunately, we are not able to help you secure sponsorship through a New Zealand company.

Please see www.immigration.govt.nz for further information if you are unsure about your visa status for New Zealand.
